This one is going to be super short and sweet because it wasn't very eventful at all.
After parting with some friends who left to Cambodia I decided that i wanted to head back north and go see the east part of Laos. My first stop would be Phon Savan to see the plain of jars. I booked a mini bus from Vang Vieng and it took about 8 hours or something to get there. Once there I walked around looking for a good place to stay. All the places I found were ok and super expensive or dirty and super expensive. I ended up finding an ok place for 60 thousand and mostly choose it because it had wifi and i discovered that there was nothing else to do there so I spend the night browsing the internet.
That night booked a tour to go see the Plain of Jars the next day. Ended up getting another one of those "dont tell the others what you paid cause they paid more" deals so i only paid 140000 instead of 160000 kip.
Next day I woke up early and packed all my stuff and went to wait in front of the hotel of which i was doing the tour with. The guy had told me the wrong time so I got to hang around for a hour and watch as a bunch of old French tourists said goodbye to all their friends and get into their mini buses.
After a 45 min drive through little villages and live stock we came to one of the jar sites. there are three main ones to see and we went to the 3rd cause it would be the least busy during that time of day.
The jars were pretty cool, Huge stone basins containing rain water and some of them some plants and insects.
The reason the jars exist is still a little mystery and they are pretty hard to date because there is no biological matter on them. The two main theories are they they were used to contain human remains like a grave yard. The other is that they were used to store food and whiskey of the surrounding villages.
Afterwords we went to a an old Russian tank that was blown off the road by a landmine. The villagers had disassembled most of it to sell the metal for money. Back on the bus we headed to jar site #2 which was just a little bigger than jar site #3. Same thing just walked around and looked at the jars. Some of the ones at this site were split by tree that had grew around them or right through the middle of them.
Onto the bus again we went to Jar site #1. We stopped for soup along the way were we sat next to a guy getting his hair cut as our guides went into the back to help cook our meal.
Jar site #1 was definitely the only one worth going to. it was much larger than all the rest and was also the home to a cave that was used as shelter during the war. the jars went all the way up the mountain side.
Then we headed back to town around mid afternoon and all went our separate ways. I went to the Bomb center and watched a film about how they were training people from local villages to remove and disarm unexploded bombs from areas in the province.
Then I walked around for a bit and didnt find anything so i sat in a restaurant and used their wifi and waited for my bus to take me to Vientiane.
Overall I think if Phon Savan was out of the way for you to get there you will certainly not be crushed if you skip it.
