After Saigon I wanted to see the Mekong Delta but I didnt have enough time to do it on my own so I decided to do it with a tour. It cost me $50 and i had everything covered from Ho Chi Minh city to Phnom Penh which was great. I probably would have spent more trying to do it on my own so it just made sense.
Most of it consisted of the usual tour stuff where they take you to places that make traditional things like clothing and foods and then give you a opportunity to buy them
First we got on a boat and went to a floating market which seemed to me to be more of a floating costco. All the boats only sold one thing and had a huge pile of whatever they were selling. We went through there pretty quick because it was later in the day and most of the boats were gone.
We went though lots of little areas that had a bunch of houses and people fishing and what not.
Most of the local people would run out and wave as you past by.
we stopped at the place where they made rice paper. They make it kinda like they would make a crepe except they steam it on some cloth. They use the waste from processing the rice to fuel the fire that boils the water.
We went to a restaurant where we tried traditional Mekong prepared fish and listen to traditional Mekong music. The music is very high pitched and screechy and not really my taste.
We visited a fishing village where each of the floating houses had 150 000 fish underneath.
one of the bridges that crossed a branch of the Mekong.
The houses are built on posts because every ear during the wet season the water rises. They mark it on the posts. If you look closely you can see a mark just at the balcony where the water was in 2000.
The guide handled all of our visas and brought us right to the bus to Phnom Penh and it was a really good deal.
Now time for Cambodia!
